A little over 2 years ago something incredible happened to me, something that I will never forget.
It was an ordinary day for me, and I was getting ready for work. I was feeling down, which is something that wasn’t unusual for me at that time in my life. To be honest with you, I felt as if nobody in the whole world cared about me. I was having a rough time at work, I had fallen out with some of my closest friends. I hated my job, and the people at my job seemed to hate me. There were certainly no massive words of encouragement being spoken over my life. I felt very down.
I had got a song stuck in my head that morning as I prepared for my day at work. The song was “Standing in the way of the light” by Birdy. I had been singing it all morning in my head and I wanted to listen to it on my car journey to work. I got into my car, plugged my phone into the car and opened up my music.
I remember very vividly the moment when i pressed my finger down onto the song “Standing in the way of the light” and as it started to play I began my journey to work. I listened to the song, feeling in a bit of a daze as I pondered upon my emotions.
When the song got to the chorus I realised that the song that was playing was not the song that I had picked. The chorus was from another Birdy song called “All about you” and the words went like this:
“You don’t have to do this on your own like there’s no one that cares about you. You don’t have to act like you’re alone, like the walls are closing in around you. You don’t have to pretend no one knows, like there’s no one that understands you. I’m not just some face you used to know, I know all about you. And you should know that SOMEONE CARES about YOU. I know all about YOU.”
If I was a man with no belief in God, I could easily have viewed this moment as coincidence. But as a believer in Jesus Christ, I know without any doubt that it wasn’t coincidence. He changed the song to the one that I needed to hear; and as that chorus played out, I could hear the voice of the Father speaking those words into my ears. The original song that I had picked was relevant in its name, but the truth is that nothing can stand in the way of God’s light, as he had proven to me in this moment.
Even when we feel like nobody cares or nobody understands, there is always someone who does care and does understand, and that’s our Heavenly Father. In one of the most well known bible verses in the world, it says “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son” [John 3:16]. Really that verse should read “For God so loves ME” because that is what it is saying, and that is the meaning behind Jesus’ sacrifice.
So if you feel like I did 2 years ago, keep your ears open and your eyes peeled for God telling you that he loves you, because I guarantee that if you’re listening, you’ll hear him say it.
