Barking up a good tree

Francis

Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7:17-19‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Jesus began by differentiating between a good tree and an evil (corrupt) tree. Then he talks about the product of a good tree and an evil tree. Then he tells us the fate of the evil tree, but not the good tree. An indication that the good tree’s fate is different from that of the evil tree.

A good tree produces good fruit; an evil tree produces evil fruit. It’s not possible to get anything good from evil. That is clear. Jesus repeats this truth for emphasis, so that we can get it and not be deceived or misled into expecting good to come out of that which is evil. Example: God will never encourage us to get involve in the lottery to make money to relieve ourselves from debt. Lottery is gambling, no matter how we wrap it. Whether we go to Las Vegas or get involve in so-called charity lottery in the confines of our bedroom, we are getting involved in something that God will not sanction. Why? Because we are trusting in something besides him. Wisdom will help us avoid getting into debt in the first place. But should we be unfortunate enough to find ourselves in debt, we need to remember that God is our source. We need to look up to him, asking, seeking, and knocking.

The product of a good tree will be good- that’s how it’s identified as a good tree. Whatever we do therefore lets think of the end result. Would it glorify God? Would we be able to thank God for it? If yes, then we are barking up a good tree and we can ask the Father for abundant fruit from our efforts. May the Lord give us wisdom to know what is a good tree so that we can flee from the evil ones.
