Light to the world
Matthew 5:14-15 ‘“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.’
Last week while waiting at Lisbon airport for my wife’s flight to arrive I sat drinking a coffee and I heard a faint voice behind me saying in English “Excuse me sir, excuse me sir”, but as the voice didn’t register with me immediately, when I turned around I was too late, a very slim figure was walking away.
It’s a common occurrence at Lisbon airport to be approached and asked for money, so I knew why the departing figure had sought my attention. This gave me time to seek God as I knew (or hoped) this person would return.
Love
Galatians 5:14 ‘for the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”’
Later the slim figure did return and approached everyone that was sat at the café area, but avoided me. I wasn’t having any of that, I made eye contact and asked a question to draw her closer.
I asked her to sit at my table, her name was Andrea and she explained she was asking people for funds as she hadn’t eaten that day. I spent the next 20 minutes or so asking her questions about herself, she was happy to share parts of her life from being brought up in institutions to the present day.
She’d sought help from local churches and two had clothed and fed her, she was also waiting for news on two job interviews.
Share
1 Corinthians 9:23 ‘I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.’
When I asked her if she prayed to God, her face lit up and she was very keen to tell me how He is her strength and her Rock, her love for Him was apparent, she wasn’t caught up in the false doctrine of praying to Mary and the Saints etc “I only pray to Jesus” she said. That was a great encouragement to me and I offered to pray with her and she Gladly accepted.
Blessed
Andrea was reluctant to take money from me, she said “What you have done for me, is more than anyone has ever done for me, no one has ever shown any interest in me like you just have. Thank you, it is worth far more than money.” I did give, and she promised me it was for food only, I trusted her word on that.
Later as my Wife’s flight had landed I saw the same slim figure carrying a food bag and buying coffee. PRAISE GOD!
Conclusion
Matthew 25:40 ‘And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
Matthew 25:42-43 ‘For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’
It is so easy to walk by someone in need or not acknowledge them. Is that what Jesus would have done?
Yes, wisdom or discernment is needed in these situations, but it is so easy to stop, take a moment and close your eyes and ask God what He wants.
